The journey home from Sri Lanka

We paid our bill after breakfast. Today I had my usual curd, granola nuts, and pineapples and I picked the pancakes and syrup which was the only item I not tried before. I couldn’t possible eat all that was there.

By the time we had assembled all our gear our driver waited at the entrance and the hotel staff heaped our hand luggage into the back of the car and we set off. For some reason our driver wanted to tell us that he had driven us from Colombo to Santani when he definitely hadn’t.

A brief stop at the service station on the Sri Lankan motorway

We made it very easily to the airport in plenty of time. We entered the terminal via the Silk Route a road for business class travellers. Our tickets etc were checked and the porters carried our bags towards the departure gates.

We found the Sri Lankan Airways lounge which impressed me. I didn’t eat anything and only had a tomato juice while we waited for our plane, however, the food looked very good.

The empty Sri Lankan business lounge

The staff told us when to leave for the plane. We walked to the gate and found it empty. We breezed through and found that the other business class passengers all seated.

A nearly 12 hour flight that starts at 1 pm is exceedingly tedious because it proves very difficult to kill the time by falling asleep. I watched two films, read a lot of pages of my current book, Silk Roads, listened to a fair amount of music and, of course, wrote up some of my the diary.

The food on the flight didn’t impress particularly the second mill half of which was absolutely inedible. If anyone asked I wouldn’t recommend Sri Lankan airways and if we returned to the island I wouldn’t recommend choose another operator even if it meant breaking the journey halfway.

We arrived at Heathrow on time and then waited for at least half a hour for our car from Terminal Parking. We drove back to find Adam and family waiting outside the house. They had brought a few pizzas that went in the ovens. We sat around chatting but the jet lag drove Maggi and I up to bed just after 10.
