Set off for Greece

Saturday morning and Maggi and I drive to Northwood to pick up Fiona and Mark for our trip to Greece. We have agreed to spend a week walking with the same guide, Jonathan, who had previously taken us walking in Crete, and last year on Andros and Tinos.

We arrived at Preveza airport after a 3 hour + flight at 7 o’clock in the evening. The apartment that had been booked for us was quite near the airport, but approximately 6 km from the town of Preveza.

The accommodation sparkled; cleanliness personified. We shared an apartment with two double bedrooms, but one bedroom was almost a corridor. You had to pass through to go from the second bedroom either to the bathroom or downstairs.

The owner of the apartments was very helpful. She drove us into town, suggested a place for us to eat for the evening and gave us a taxi drivers number so we could get back safely.

We ate at the recommended restaurant a little way away from the port. We were shown the food and then choose what we wanted without bothering with the menu. It was all fine.

The taxi turned up on time and drove us back. I disturbed Maggi all night with my snoring, but fortunately her resentment at the disturbed sleep didn’t last,

We didn’t rise until ten, the latest I can remember for a long time, performed our ablutions and packed the cases. The cleaning staff took our bags and put them away in a locked cupboard.

All four of us then headed into town on foot. I realised that we really needed some sun lotion on all the time. On arrival in Preveza we found a small taverna where we ordered too much food for our breakfast/lunch.

Back to the hotel and then the airport. We found Jonathan and Myriam and slowly the other members of our walking group appeared. We were all introduced to each other and everyone promptly forgot my name. I, of course, remembered some names and others I confused, but some names did stick.

We drove for 3 ½ hours up into the mountains to a small village just a few miles from the Albanian border called Little Papingo. The room allocated to Maggi and I appears not to have had any work done on it since it was built 30 or more years ago. While the accommodation lacks any sophistication the welcome is very friendly..

We ate a reasonable meal in the evening, as usual it began with Greek Salad, followed by several vegetable dishes and then some meat. Myriam and Jonathan paid for this meal including the drinks. Nobody abused their hospitality.

We returned to the room and managed to sleep all the way through to 8 am without much difficulty.
