16th November Travel all day.

We embarked on our boat from Drake Bay at 8 am with Christian at the helm. We had paid our bill and left a tip in the box.

Maggi & Carol Board the boat

The calm ocean allowed us to speed across the surface and we made a slight detour to some small rocky islands off the coast. Here we found a flock of Magnificent Frigate birds both circling around us and nesting.

We turned back and entered the Sierpe River to head back to our bus. On the way we took another deviation along a small tributary to see close up the Mangrove forest. The forest with its roots high above the land provides a buffer to the ocean and the storms that come from the Pacific.

Along the way we saw both Spider and Capuchin Monkeys playing in the forest that lines the banks of the river. We finally arrived at Sierpe where Freddy waited to drive us on to San Jose. The long journey, split by stops at a supermarket and lunch, meant we didn’t arrive at our hotel until 6 pm.

By this time people wanted to have a snack at most and some didn’t want anything. Maggi and I had a hamburger without the bun and a drink and then went to bed.

Apart from the first couple of hours the rest of the day was wasted. Because we sat around for so long at lunchtime we ended up entering San Jose during rush hour. The traffic added an extra hour or more to the journey. This could all have been better if we hadn’t needed to fill Alejandro and Freddy’s stomachs.
