The Journey to Diani Beach

  • by

At last we can rise at a reasonable time in the morning and have breakfast at a civilised time.

We packed all our things and the guy Dennis, who drove us to the Karen Blixen Camp took us back to the airport. I thought it strange that a Masai  should have a name like Denis or Simon. Perhaps this is imposed from school (as it used to be in Hong Kong) or by the Karen Blixen Camp.

All the drivers and guides waiting to pick up or drop off the guests

Our flight originally due to take 2 ¼ hours ended up running from 11 am to 3 pm. On the journey by Mombasa Air from Mari North Airstrip to Diani Beach we stopped at 3 additional stops. Up down picking up passengers and dropping them off. What a pain.

The hotel, Waterlovers, too big to be called boutique, but quite small sits on the beach and is only a few minutes from the airport. Someone picked us up and dropped us and our bags, which then miraculously appeared in our new room.

We had received glowing reports about the cuisine at the new place from a gay couple at Karen Blixen Camp. I therefore sat down for supper with great expectations. These hopes were not entirely fufiled but we had a decent meal. No more no less.

Dinner at Waterlovers, giant prawns

The scene of the hotel is excellent and we’ll probably not leave the site for the 3 nights we stay in Diani Beach.
