First Day Walking

We all gathered together for breakfast and prepared for our walk. The party left the accommodation, I’m loath to describe it as a hotel, and climbed a short distance before we could begin a major descent to the river

Nick, one of the group, slipped and grazed his arm. He held it gingerly throughout the rest of the day to indicate that it still hurt, or maybe it was just uncomfortable. Some people filled their water bottles from the spring that we passed,

The dramatic scenery of the over head rock formations, the beautiful wild flowers all along the path made the journey very special.

We arrived in Papingo Major and stopped for an iced coffee. The slow pace of some of the others in our group started to irritate me, but I tried not to let it go any further.

From the cafe we had a short detour up to a religious hut where Jonathan read one of his epistles. This little exert discussed the issue of love and we returned on the same path not speaking so we could learn to love our immediate surroundings.

On the way we encountered a bear print in the mud and a tortoise beside the path.

We arrived at our lunch stop and had a very enjoyable meal. They served the usual Greek salad followed by a series of vegetable dishes and finally by a meat plate. This time we had goat.

After our repast the return involved a long drop down to the bottom of the canyon where we crossed the bridge. I looked down into the cool water of the passing stream and had half a mind to remove my boots and paddle. I didn’t.

We began our ascent but as we did it became clear that our party was splinting into 2 groups, one that kept up with Jonathan while the other half lagged behind.

Jonathan then agreed that we should continue at our own pace and six of us left the others behind. By the time we arrive back in Little Papingo Maggi and I were sweating away. The first priority was a shower in our awkward bathroom.

After the refreshment from the shower Maggi and I walked down the road and had an ice-cream. We came back and I fell asleep for a short while.

In the evening we rejoined the group and Jonathan roped us into a quiz. Fortunately that didn’t last long and we sat down for our meal. The usual starter of salad, a couple of vegetable dishes was finally followed by chicken. Naturally I didn’t participate, happy to stick to the vegetables. We hung around after the end of the meal chatting and then headed back to our cell to sleep.
