Back to Vienna

Slept well and woke to find I couldn’t access the Synology NAS. We have had a power cut in the road and the NAS hasn’t restarted.

I spent most of our time at breakfast trying various ways of fixing this but to no avail. We partook of our first meal of the day in a small cafe near the Hotel Elizabeth. Two cappuccinos and avocado on bagel with salad has set me up for the day.

Going out for breakfast saved us €40 compared with the hotel and I’m sure they couldn’t have provided better fare. The food, service and relatively low cost in the bars, cafes and restaurants of Trencin has impressed.

We caught the busy train from Trencin to Bratislava where we changed to pick up the connecting train that whisked us to Vienna.

In Vienna we debated the best way to pay for our journey across town and decided on a 24 hour pass. We exited from the Ubahn station at Westbahnhof and walked down the road to our Braunhof Hotel. We couldn’t actual go to our room so we had a drink and a bowl of soup.

In the afternoon we began with a bit of culture and headed off to the Albertina Museum in the city centre. This magnificent palace built in 1744 houses some of the best late 19th C and early 20th C by all the masters of that age donated by a wealthy lawyer from Lichtenstein. Works by Monet, Picasso, Degas, Sisley, Seurat and many others adorn the walls. I enjoyed this section of the museum the most. Honoré Daumier has almost one whole floor dedicated to his art and cartoons of politics and life in the 19th Century. Jon waxed lyrical about his art.

We all met up again at the cafe before we set off for our evening meal a bus ride away at Bauernbräu. A busy Austrian restaurant but with plenty of English speaking clients. I had succulent spare ribs with chips. Probably my favourite meal of the holiday.

We jumped on the train back to Westbahnhof where Jon and Nick left Garry and myself to find a bar showing the Athletico Madrid V Arsenal match which featured two penalties and a score line of 1-1. A bit of a rusty performance by the Gunners but one I’m sure they’ll be happy with.

Waiting for the Arsenal match
