Snorkelling off Isla de Caño

Of course, we started early and picked up the snorkelling gear from the resort to take with us. It took about 1 hour to reach the diving place. Jose and Elia accompanied us again on the journey and would be our guides for the day.

The Isla de Caño, another National Park, has restrictions and charges for diving and entering. The rangers not only collect the money but are responsible for policing and managing the areas.

Before arriving at our destination our captain spotted a humpback whale and its baby in the waters ahead. We ran in parallel to the pair and saw them come up for air as they swam along. The sight of the two of them inspires awe in the gracefulness of such large and powerful creatures.

Christian our captain anchored in the shallows near the island and we all piled into the water. Elia led and we followed. I had difficulty because I couldn’t keep the water out of the mask for very long. This made the whole snorkelling experience very frustrating.

I kept up as well as I could. I managed to see a couple of small white nosed sharks as well as a lot of unknown fishes of up to 40 cm long. After about 40 minutes I felt I had had enough and I returned to the boat. Alejandro had all ready given up. I don’t think he felt at home in the sea. Maggi had been very dubious about the whole idea of putting her head underwater but managed extremely well and joined the boat after me.

Once everyone had climbed on board we headed to the shore where fruit and water was provided. Carol had been sick from drinking too much seawater.

Some of us didn’t want to go for a second dive. Elia offered to show us around the island and Tara, Sue, Maggi and I accepted her invitation. A pleasant walk up to the top and along the ridge with Elia trying to explain the nature of the forest in her broken English. All very was nice.

Back to the boat and onto the mainland where a picnic awaited us, rice, black beans, tuna, chicken, pasta and salad. Pretty tasty for a lunch in those conditions.

Return to the boat and to the hotel for about 2:30 which gave us plenty of time for coffee, swim, shower and read etc before back to the Wi-Fi area for a drink and our evening meal. Today’s food topped the other evenings with a quinoa salad to begin followed by a seafood pasta in a tomato sauce. All excellent but let down by a funny cake as a dessert.  The only problem with the meal was the time it took to serve it. We sat down at 7 pm and the pudding arrived at 5 to 9.

The cake went down in about 1 minute and it was then off to bed.
