Trip to Cambridge to see Nick

12 October 2022

After waking up too early and sorting myself out I headed to Cambridge. I hadn’t seen Nick since March when we had stayed in the bunkhouse in the Peak District.

He seemed glad to see me. I was offered a cup of tea. He boiled the water in a kettle in the hall. Apparently Caroline needs special filtered water and her own kettle which sits in the kitchen. After wandering through Cambridge we arrived at Kettle’s Yard a white middle class haunt for the over fifties. We sat down and I had a salad and 2 tiny falafels with a touch of humus for £7.70. Not the place for the poor.

We chatted away about many inconsequential things as we had from the time I had arrived until I left. He had organised tickets for 3:20 but it by the time we had finished eating and were fed up with the scenery we thought we would look at the exhibition they had on at the centre.

The current artist featured is called Howardrena Pindell and the exhibition had the sobriquet “A New Language”. I didn’t see any new language or form of communication that had any interest, beauty or worth. Unfortunately my iPhone didn’t capture the putrid colours of the following image.

Howardrena Pindell and her New Language?

Never mind we had also come for a tour of Jimmy Eade’s home which is attached to Kettle’s Yard. Jimmy Eade had been a director at the Tate in the 20’s and 30’s and had befriended a number of important artists of his era and claimed his profession as Artist’s Friend. As a result he had acquired a very interesting collection of art from Henry Moore, Barbara Hepworth and his favourite Ben Nicholson among others ( that I hadn’t heard of). I would be happy to make the tour again as it wasn’t just the art on the walls and the sculptures that made it interesting but also the house itself, which was in two sections going over a path that passed underneath the house.

We walked back to Caroline’s house and I left with Nick suggesting we revise the tour of European Capitals of Culture. An entertaining day.
