Kenya, our flight and arrival

  • by

We landed at Nairobi airport after our 9 hour flight around 9:30. We had travelled using our Avios companion ticket which could not be upgraded but were lucky enough to travel World Economy Premium. A superior class to economy with slightly more leg room and slightly more reclining seats. It still didn’t make the journey pleasant. The food doesn’t improve.

On landing were herded into a bus and then shipped around the airport. We all piled out at the immigration hall and there was a rush towards the various queues for different categories of arrivals. A young woman held up a sign with Maggi’s name, took our bags and directed us to one of the queues. Unfortunately she did’t choose well and we waited longer than some of our fellow passengers.

Once we had passed through immigration everything proceeded smoothly. The young lady introduced us to our guide for Nairobi, Ali, and he called our driver. We all drove to our first hotel of the trip, The Karen Blixen Garden Cottages

We wait for our driver at the hectic Nairobi Airport

Our journey had started just before 7 am when our pleasant taxi driver drove carefully to the airport. We had booked with BA via Avios Companion ticket which only allowed us to travel Economy. In actual fact we found ourselves upgraded to Economy Plus.

On this plane I didn’t think the upgrade offered much, until I saw how extremely packed the economy passengers had to travel. I dread our journey back when we will be jammed into the back of the plane.

When we arrived at Karen Blixen Cottage Gardens we received a very warm welcome along with the warm towels. Both of us felt shattered, but at the same time very peckish. We walked over to the late night restaurant and I had a very soggy cheese sandwich with drink.

As soon as we returned to the room we both collapsed into bed and fell asleep quickly.
