More time in Maui

Scam in the morning

I felt much better following my day on the loo and the release of the pressure at 2 am.

In order to watch Leicester v Arsenal I had set the alarm for 5 am. I had chatted to Greg so that I could use his code for the Peak app that streams Premier League in the US. He had set it all up on Carrie’s iPad. Unfortunately he hadn’t told me the iPad code and I hadn’t asked him, therefore, I was locked out of the iPad when I came to try and use it.

Look up the match on the web and maybe pay to watch it. I thought I had found the same app as Greg uses and paid a $1 introductory offer price to join. Of course it didn’t work. It was a scam because it didn’t give me access to the match. I tried to unsubscribe but failed. I looked on my Revolut App and found $1 in and then out. However next day $59 had been requested. Thanks to the people at Revolut they had stopped the payment. I transferred the balance to Maggi’s card and ordered a new card. No real harm done.

The people behind this scam must be well known to the banks and clearinghouses as they don’t just do it once.

Coastal Walks

From Thursday 23rd until we left on Monday 27th I exercised by walking along the coast from our hotel.

A beach path led from our hotel northward and each day I set off and followed the path. The path provided great views of the shoreline and beach as well as the islands that lay off the west coast of Maui.

After a while the beach path is interrupted by the hotels that litter the coast near where we stayed. This meant weaving in an out of the buildings. I presume the hotel owners weren’t that keen on visitors walking through their properties, because the signs for the beach path would disappear. You could then find yourself walking much further than necessary. By the Monday I had figured out the most efficient route passing through small alleyways and hotel lobbies so ass not to go too far out of the way.

The views were great.

Wild life

Every day of the vacation we have watched the humpback whales playing in the sea just off the coast. They breached the water line with multiple jumps every day. A spectacular spectacle for anyone who has a slight interest in wild life. It’s a pity that I couldn’t capture this beautiful sight with the iPhone.

On the Thursday we drove south and stopped at a small parking spot with an adjacent coastal path. Here we found a fully grown turtle almost on the beach. I have never been that close to a turtle before. Does anyone else watching such a natural sight feel guilty about the amount of plastic they abandon daily.

Food

Buying decent food either in a restaurant or in the supermarket always proves difficult. Dukes the cafe at our hotel sells rubbish food. In addition to the shrimp salad on our first day I also ate there with Sadie on the Sunday. I thought I’d try the cheeseburger. A mistake. The waiter asked me how I wanted the burger cooked and I replied medium rare. It made no difference. The burger arrived well done as usual. The chips arrived cold and I complained. The chips were replaced with freshly fried ones. The chips are ultra thin and tasteless. They probably come from some reconstructed commodity rather than potatoes.

We, however, did have a nice meal at the Westin further up the coast. The restaurant called, Waicoco, offered a vegetarian curry which I shared with Alex and Maggi. Later in the week we returned so the kids could play in the pools. This time we just had a drink and a snack. The snack of nachos and tuna with a variety of sauces again hit the mark.

Cocktails

During the week both Maggi and I have indulged in a few cocktails, which is unusual for us. It must be the influence of Alex and Greg.
