Sometimes it is just about communicating that things happen. In the process of organising a boys walk away in Monmouth I sent a reply asking if anyone would like to walk today. Steve replied saying how much he would like to and that it is such a long time since we met that he was excited about it.
The weather forecast threatened extensive rain and I came prepared with over trousers. As usual when you have everything in place for poor weather the result is always less dramatic, and the same was true this time. We had a very gentle walk along the grand Union to the Coy Carp where we had a coffee. We returned along the Grand Union and then turned back into Ricky via the Ebury Way. We sat in the garden of the Coach & Horses in ricky eating a sandwich and drinking a pint. For most people that would be a 30 minute operation. For Steve you know it’s going to last at least an hour. I slowed my pace to match his.
While the walk of approximately 7 miles was not particularly exciting I really enjoyed his company. We chatted all through the walk about all sorts of things from the state of his ex-wife’s, Jackie’s, health, to politics and of course Arsenal. He’s extremely enthusiastic about next season and the vague possibility of winning the league. I don’t think I have enjoyed a walk so much for a long time.
