The walk up to the shade for lunch

  • by

Today our walk started directly from the hotel and we followed footpath 1 up the hills. This route passed through many small villages but in the 3 ½ hours of walking we only saw one person walking and a couple of builders.

On the way up we passed by a donkey in a field above the footpath. Suddenly gust of wind blew Marg’s hat off and into the field. No one moved to fetch it. I thought, I wonder if I can climb the wall and retrieve the hat. So I did.

I can’t work out why some properties are left as derelict while others that may well be next door are immaculately kept.

While the temperature seemed to be in the high 20s we had plenty of shade on our journey.

We arrived at the hamlet of Maivntes for our lunch at a charming restaurant called Shade. We sat underneath a large plane tree where we received the customary Greek salad followed by a form of ratatouille and warm marrow. The star of the meal arrived when I was more or less full, goat and chips. I tasted it and it was nice, but I didn’t want anymore than a mouthful.

Finally out came Greek yogurt with persimmon and blueberries which made a very nice ending to the meal.

Maggi and I walked on with the group for approximately 1 ½ Km following the local water course which fed the crops. We then enjoyed a ride back to the hotel. The others arrived 2 hours later.

In the evening we returned to the sea shore for another meal at the fish restaurant. The only notable feature of the evening came early on when Marg sent out a distress call on the WhatsApp group saying she was in the square and nobody responded until all the rest of us had seated ourselves at the restaurant. In the end Jonathan fetched her.

Of course Jamie became the villain in the piece for leaving her stranded. When she arrived at the table she gave him the evil eye.
