Crantock SW Path

Along the South-west Path

We made our way to Vikki’s apartment where we took the Martin’s car a couple of miles up the coast.

Just as we were about to leave Kaya ran from the car to chase a chicken belonging to Vikki’s landlord. We don’t think it killed the bird but it may have done.

We intended to visit the spot where Vikki and Mel had scattered some of the ashes of Alan and Lynn. The ashes lay opposite a rock called the Chick. We passed by a couple of camp sites where Vikki and Mel had spent their holidays with Alan and Lynn and parked up.

The scenery along this coast raises ones spirits, wonderful rock formations with caves where the water has cut into the granite and the rolling cliffs.

We eventually found our spot and looked down to the Chick. Here we could just see the seals lying on the rocks. You couldn’t say the sun bathed because of the cloudy weather. We ate our packed lunch, well everyone had a pasty from the village shop and I had some fruit and crisps. Just as we finished our food it began to rain.

I walk back alone

Vikki, Maggi and Ava wanted to stay near the Chick probably to reminisce about Alan and Lynn and Vikki’s youth. Martin and I walked back towards the car. I felt good about my Achilles which had stood up well to the ups and downs of the cliff walk.

Martin and I waited about 20 minutes when I decided that it would be good to walk back to Crantock rather than wait on the beach.

I set off from Poly Joke bay upwards to the crest and as I reached the top it began to rain. At first I wasn’t sure in which direction to walk to return to our place. I figured it out as the rain became heavier. I had walked about 150 metres when I decided it would be a good idea to cadge a lift. The second car to pass me stopped and drove me the ¾ mile to the top of Crantock. By then the rain had eased off. I waited awhile in the sheltered bus stop but couldn’t get through to Maggi so I walked home.

Some time later all the girls arrived with Kaya, Vikki’s Hungarian Vizsla.

The Cornishman music treat

Around six we left for a drink and to watch some local musicians in The Cornishman pub. The place was jammed packed and we had to stand at the back. The band consisted of about 15 musicians who played mostly folk music, with a few country songs and the odd pop tune. They had the audience singing along and clapping and proved entertaining.

The band plays on

They had a break and the noise abated somewhat, although an acapellego group took their place. Martin and I decided to return to Vikki’s place to get dinner cooked. The girls took ages before they returned. Meanwhile Martin and I looked out over the sea to watch the sun go down and lightening miles out to sea.

Sunset over Crantock

We ate the spaghetti dinner around 10:30 and Maggi and I walked back to our apartment in the pitch black.
