Another Sorrento day

  • by
Monday morning

This morning we had our breakfast in the cafe below our apartment block. I chose the egg and avocado on toast which gave me a nice start for the day.

The walk began following the main tourist road through the centre of town, but today we turned sharp left at the cathedral and headed slightly up hill past a local secondary school. Outside the building stood many many motorbikes, scooters and e-bikes, presumably for the pupils.

Ahead of us a staircase that climbed the cliff face in front of us. The steps zigzagged up and up and up. On every turn a small shrine to our lady gave us a chance to pray or say thanks. I walked on past panting as we rose above the town. Eventually we arrived at a more or less flatter area.

The rest of the group had managed to be ahead of us while Maggi and I walked behind. Suddenly we found we had lost them. They had stopped at an olive mill which we had passed. Both of us had noticed a strong smell of bananas as we sauntered pass the mill, but no one had invited us in.

Shortly afterwards when we had all managed to meet up we stopped at a restaurant for a drink in the village of Priora. The owner/maitre d’ of this small bistro had one joke after another. Our joker also suggested that we eat at his restaurant in the evening. We had our beer or whatever and Maggi and I decided to return to Sorrento.

While waiting for the bus we chatted to two Australians who mentioned the joker’s bistro and were anything but flattering. The bus arrived and we returned to our Airbnb.

We returned to Sorrento on the bus while the others continued the walk. When we arrived in the town we decided that we needed to check out the route to the ferry we intended to catch the next morning for our trip to Positano. At the station just around the corner from our Airbnb we caught the 08 bus that in 10 minutes had us at the ferry port.

Although the port area had many bars and restaurants none of them looked appealing so we almost immediately jumped back on board the 08 to return to the station. at the same time all the work force of Sorrento also decided to return home after their days work and the bus only just managed to mount the cliffs.

For the rest of the afternoon Maggi and i wondered around the town and came to look back down on the sea.

In the evening we told the story about the Australians condemnation of the restaurant, but nobody wanted to listen or accept it as true. We caught the bus and arrived around 7:30. The wonderful starter that the host had promised turned out to be just ok. I had a pasta dish that swam with cheese with a little mushroom. After half-dozen mouthfuls I couldn’t bear it any more and left 80% of the food.

We left after finishing our main course and walked back to the bus stop where fortunately the bus stood and we all raced to catch it. I was the last to climb on board. We made it back to our accommodation.
