5th July – a secret birthday celebration

  • by

I had looked up the best sandy beach on Whidbey and some internet guru had suggested Double Bluff Beach. It didn’t take us long to get there and we found parking fairly easy.

It turned out that the sea stretched away in the distance. We planted ourselves besides a pile of driftwood that had been assembled into a tepee shape. With a couple of towels this enabled some people to receive some shade. I walked down towards the ocean over sand and a stream running into the water.

Bennett played on the sand chasing other dogs and thoroughly enjoying himself. When I arrived at the water line I found water absolutely freezing. I couldn’t go in further than my ankles. The cold penetrates to my bones and makes me shiver all over.

A bit more messing about on the beach and then we collected the lunch and ate it under some shade behind the driftwood and beach.

Maggi wanted to go to Pen Cove Tap Room so instead of heading straight home we diverted towards Freeland. We had our one pint and then returned to the house. After a little bit of shut eye Maggi asked me if I like to go for a walk. I found a place called Putney County Park. Alex and Bennett came with us. There was a decent sized car park and we walked into the woods. We found strolling through the forest really exhilarating and nice and cool compared with the temperatures in the direct sunlight.

When we arrived home the rest of the crew had prepared a surprise birthday party for Maggi because they won’t be able to all be around on her real birthday in November. Islay, Adam and Sarah had made a cake, they had prepared bunting and decorated the table. A really special job for Maggi and she was deeply touched by all the efforts made to show her how much she is appreciated.

Carrie organised games and Greg made a great barbecue. A really special night for close to the end of our holidays.

Greg takes a well-deserved rest
