A day trip to Ventimiglia

We caught the 655 bus from the village and arrived at Cagnes-Sur-Mer station for the train to Ventimiglia. The cost of the return journey for two costs €25. The trip takes about 1 hour 20 minutes and is a beautiful ride along the riviera coastline, through Monte Carlo and Menton.

We both made finding a decent cappuccino our first priority on arrival. That didn’t take long. We also wanted to buy some olive oil for our french house. The oil tends to be better and cheaper in Italy. We wandered around and then found Olio Salvo Ventimiglia. In the process we criss crossed the local market which buzzed with both customers and store holders who had lovely collections of food and drink.

The Oil Shop was very sweet with a young woman who spoke reasonable English she suggested a restaurant for our lunch, but we didn’t take her advice. With 1 litre of olive oil in our rucksack we wandered the town looking for a present for Madeleine and Tom’s Golden Anniversary.

After one unsuccessful tour we arrived at the restaurant we had booked, Consani Osteria and had a meal consisting of a bowl of very nice pasta with a cream and anchovy sauce followed by sea bass with courgette. In addition to our food we accepted the waiter’s recommendation for wine which is slightly out of the ordinary for us, and even more so when it was the most expensive on the list. The food was more than acceptable. The pasta was much better than the night before at Jasmin and I walked away not too full and with a pleasant feeling.

Maggi still wanted an ice-cream and we walked down to the front. Here the local council seemed to be in the process of erecting sea barriers. Many trucks moving large boulders made for loud crashing noises. The promenade has not been made very attractive. Perhaps this is the council’s first step to upgrade the seafront.

Maggi finished her below par ice-cream and we did another circle of the town looking for an anniversary present and then gave up. We walked back to the station and caught the 3:18 train back to Cagnes-sur-Mer. We arrived home at 5:40.
