First day in Sorrento

Sorrento walk to Massa

We had no breakfast in the flat apart from my Greek yoghurt so everyone wanted to go out for breakfast. It didn’t take long to find a cafe and we managed to sit all together. I had scrambled eggs on toast while others had more.

We came back, quickly cleaned teeth and then set off again. We walked all along the town’s tourist route and out the other side. If this is off season I hate to think how busy it must be in the summer.

When we had left the centre and started to climb the throng disappeared and the six of us remained the only people on the trail. We could soon look down on the town and the bay of Naples.

The walk that Matt had found wandered through narrow shaded alleys up and up until we arrived at the village of Massa. Here the party stopped and we sat at a bar for a drink. I wandered over to take a picture from a viewpoint of the Neapolitan Bay below.

We started back. After a short descent Matt lead Fiona, Mark and Helen on down to the coast while Maggi and I stayed at a higher level. For awhile we kept off the main road, but I had misjudged exactly where we stood and where we needed to go. This mistake meant that we ended up walking on the main road between Sorrento and Positano. The route has no pavement and feels very precarious as the cars head towards you on the winding bends.

We stopped at a village and found a bus stop. We didn’t have to wait long before we sat on the local bus to return to Sorrento.

Surprisingly I fancied an ice-cream and I indulged my fancy with Maggi’s help. I picked a pistachio flavour but I couldn’t finish my one scoop and regretted having wanted the gelato.

Evening Meal

We decided to take the advice of our BnB host and tried a restaurant called O’ Parrucchiano La Favorita on the Corsa Italia. When we arrived at 6:45 we found a queue of approximately 20 people.

Along with everyone else we walked up to the higher level where a reception party waited to show us to a table. A group of the staff sat at a trestle table and reminded me of approaching the stewards at a local election giving out your ballot paper. We sat down and had a reasonable meal in this very large restaurant that I expect could hold more than 150 guests.

As we left Alex called and she agreed to meet us in New Orleans in February. Something we can look forward to.
