First day on Maui

  • by

Mixed weather but overall warm makes this a pleasant place to stay in February.

The hotel, Honua Kai Resort and Spa, has work going on which if you are in the room during the day is very disturbing. Maggi encourages Alex to speak to the management and ask for a change of room or a discount. Eventually we opt for the discount and receive $300 off per day for each day of our stay.

At lunch time we visit the cafe by the pools and beach called Dukes. As usual  the cost of the food doesn’t really affect the quality. I ordered a shrimp salad Alex then ordered a couple of extra starters. The bill came to $250 plus tip. Their getting their $300 per day back quite quickly.

Maggi enjoys a cocktail with her prawn salad.
The view from our hotel room

The hotel has everything you need except a decent swimming pool. There are several pools but all of them are very shallow, 3ft deep is not comfortable enough to swim in. Of course it is not far from the sea where you can swim to your hearts content.

Whale watching is very popular at this time of the year and it is easy to see the humpback whales playing off the shore.

In the evening Greg booked a restaurant along the coast which made the Dukes place look positively cheap. The place was busy with diners and we had to wait for our booking time as we had arrived early. We wandered onto the beach while we waited for our seats to be free.

This fish restaurant has a very good reputation and certainly the prices reflect a very up market food emporium. However I was disappointed with my starter. On the other hand my main course tasted great. I must make more effort to take down what I am eating so I can describe it a few days later. I didn’t actually see the bill so I can only imagine how extravagant it must have been.
